There is something about Queenstown...

New Zealand has a special place in my heart. Four years ago I stopped here for the first time as part of a long backpacker trip. Everyday I walked around town with a DSLR camera and kit lens taking photographs. Back then I was just falling in love with photography, and Queenstown's beautiful landscape was the perfect backdrop. During that visit I also spent a few days on the slopes and met some great friends. I tried a Ferburger. It was awesome.

This week I am back in Queenstown to shoot, but this time to cover a live poker tournament called Queenstown Snowfest. I spent my first day shooting scenery around town, starting first with a bratwurst breakfast, followed by a few holes of disc golf (“frolf” according to George Costanza), fish and chips at Aggy’s Shack and a luge ride on top of the Skyline gondola.

Earlier this week I also got to photograph Singaporean poker pro Bryan Huang on top of the ski slopes. I have to envy Bryan – he found his passion at a young age and had tons of success early on. Yet he is as gracious and humble as they come. I’ve been shooting his portrait for years now, and here he is smiling for my camera for the nth time while freezing his ass off at the edge of Coronet Peak.

By next week I’ll be back home in Hong Kong, where I’ll be in town for a busy month and then off to Eastern Europe for a proper holiday. Work travel has been heavy this year, for which I am very grateful. Here is a shot of the Empire State on Independence Day during my visit home a few weeks back.
